EU wine labelling regulation
Everything you need to know about the legal requirements for digital labelling in the European Union. Clear, up-to-date and action-oriented information.
⚖️ EU legal framework
The Regulation (EU) 2021/2117 sets out new transparency obligations for wine producers across the European Union. Since December 2023, it is mandatory to provide nutritional information and the list of ingredients for all wines marketed in the EU.
Digital labelling via QR code is the official solution recognised by the European Commission to meet these requirements without overloading the physical label.
Mandatory information
These are the details that must be available to the consumer under EU regulation.
📋 List of ingredients
All ingredients used in making the wine, including additives and processing aids, must be listed in descending order of quantity.
Example: Grape, sulphites, fining agents (egg albumin)
⚠️ Allergens
Clear identification of substances that cause allergies or intolerances. Allergens such as sulphites, egg, milk or derived products must be highlighted.
Example: Sulphites, egg (albumin), milk (casein)
📊 Nutritional information
Nutrition declaration per 100 ml: energy value, fat, saturated fat, carbohydrates, sugars, protein and salt.
Example: Energy (kcal/kJ), main nutrients in grams
⚡ Energy values
Energy value expressed both in kilocalories (kcal) and kilojoules (kJ) per 100 ml. It must be accurate and calculated according to the official tables.
Example: 85 kcal / 356 kJ per 100 ml
The QR code as the official solution
The European Commission recognises digital labelling via QR code as a valid method for providing the mandatory information.
Legal recognition
Regulation (EU) 2021/2117 expressly allows the use of electronic means, such as QR codes, to provide ingredients and nutritional information.
Guaranteed accessibility
The consumer must be able to access the information free of charge, immediately and without needing to register or provide personal data.
Legible and clear format
The information behind the QR code must be presented clearly, understandably and in the language of the country where the wine is marketed.
No consumer tracking
Using the QR code to collect consumer data or track their behaviour is prohibited. Product information only.
Advantages of digital labelling
The QR code not only complies with the law, it also brings commercial and operational benefits to your winery.
